What we need to know to feel more alive

If we keep on doing what we have always done…we don’t learn and grow. We stick to the same routine, within our comfort zone, listen to the same people we have known for a long time. The world is the same, it feels like nothing changes and it feels like a safe space. Happy bubble.

Except, perhaps there is a stuck-ness in that experience? It’s a bit boring?

Or we try to experience everything in life, trying to achieve our true potential by doing everything we can. We juggle work, family, friends, accomplishments, everything we feel like we should do to have that fulfilled life.

But perhaps, it feels like something is missing? Even though we are busy?

So what can we do to feel more alive? Perhaps, by listening to the lessons learned by those nearing their death. This was what Bronnie Ware, a then palliative nurse did, and she wrote it in her book “Top 5 regrets of the dying”. They are:

  • I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
  • I wish I hadn’t worked so much.
  • I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.
  • I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
  • I wish that I had let myself be happier.

Having the courage to break away from what you know to what you don’t know is a skill you can learn.
